Sumner County

Two kinds of ground in one county.

Sumner County runs from Old Hickory Lake on the Cumberland River up to the Kentucky line.

Old Hickory Dam went in during the early 1950s, homes followed the shoreline, and Hendersonville became the largest city in the county.

A state survey from 1874 put the ground plainly: the northern half of Sumner lies on the Highland Rim and the southern half in the Central Basin, split by an escarpment known as the Ridge.

The ground

Basin below the Ridge, Rim above it.

South of the Ridge, around Hendersonville and Gallatin, you are on Nashville Basin limestone, with clay soils over rock.

North of the Ridge, toward Portland, the ground is Highland Rim. The USDA describes Highland Rim soils like Dickson as silt loam over a dense fragipan 18 to 36 inches down, which water moves through slowly to very slowly.

Streams north of the Ridge drain toward the Barren and Red rivers in Kentucky. Streams to the south run to the Cumberland.

What that means for your job

In the basin: plan for rock in trenches and pads, and grade clay so it sheds water.

On the Rim: a fragipan can hold water up near the surface after rain, even on fairly flat ground. Drainage there comes down to grade and swales that carry the water off.

Everywhere: fence rows and wooded lots grow back fast. Forestry mulching opens them up without burn piles.
