The ground

Cedar glades, limestone and clay.

Wilson County sits in the Nashville Basin.

In the inner basin, outcrops of Ordovician limestone are common and soils are generally shallow, according to the EPA and USGS ecoregion map of Tennessee.

The state protects several cedar glades in the county, including the Cedars of Lebanon State Forest Natural Area and Vine Cedar Glade, which it describes as a harsh glade where limestone outcropping is prevalent.

Tennessee State Parks warns visitors at Cedars of Lebanon about deep sinkholes.

The USDA describes one Nashville Basin soil, the Gladeville series, as 3 to 12 inches of flaggy silty clay loam over hard, thin-bedded limestone, often broken by ledges of bare rock.

Deeper soils like Talbott are clay over limestone, 20 to 40 inches to rock, and slow to drain.

What that means for your job

Plan for rock. A trench or pad can hit limestone a few inches down at one end and miss it at the other. We talk through rock before the dig is quoted.

Clay holds water. Slow clay is why so many low spots pond after a storm. Getting the grade right usually does more than adding pipe.

Respect sinkholes. We do not shape a yard to send more runoff into one.
